Hi, Carole Kraft Edwards here from Natural Gardens Consulting. As the days get shorter and it starts to get colder, it’s normal to feel less inspired to garden. But don’t pack away your gardening tools just yet! There’s still a lot you can do to improve your garden before winter comes.
Now is an excellent time to plant heartwarming winter blooms. Many perennials can be planted in the ground at this stage, including asters, chrysanthemums, diascia, gaura, cranesbill geranium, geum, and penstemon. You might also consider California natives like heuchera, monkey flower, and Salvia clevelandii, which thrive with minimal water and care, making them ideally suited for California’s climate.
If you feel you’ve postponed your fall gardening, don’t worry. Taking small, smart steps now—such as adding native plants and mulching to protect and enrich your soil—can still lead to great rewards.
I’m here to help guide you through these last-minute planting opportunities.
